Is SCFD For You?

Is my organization eligible for SCFD funding?

SCFD is a voter-approved cultural tax that is collected and distributed to scientific and cultural non-profit organizations serving the residents of the seven-county metro-Denver area.

The first step toward SCFD grant support is receiving eligibility. While the following questions won’t provide official confirmation of eligibility, they will help you understand whether your organization is likely to qualify, or not.

First things first:

  • If your organization has received SCFD funds in the past but has not received funding for the last three consecutive years, you must reapply for eligibility.
  • If your organization receives SCFD funds but has changed its mission statement, activities, or location you don’t need to reapply for eligibility, but you do need to report those changes to the SCFD office immediately.

The following questions will help you better understand if you should take additional steps to explore eligibility.

The Do's

If you can answer yes to all of the following questions, your organization could be eligible. If you answer no to any of these questions, your organization is likely not eligible.

My organization:

  • Is a 501(c)3 nonprofit incorporated with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office OR an agency of local government that has a cultural sub-unit.
  • Has been in existence and providing services to the public for at least the last five consecutive years as a 501(c)3 organization.
  • Has filed either Form 990 or 990-EZ with the IRS according to IRS requirements (not required by divisions of local government).
  • Has as its primary purpose to enlighten and entertain the public through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement or preservation of visual arts, performing arts, cultural history, natural history, or natural sciences.
The Don'ts

SCFD does not fund any of the following types of organizations:

  • an agency of the state
  • a library
  • a school, an educational institution, or a foundation affiliated with a school or educational institution
  • a church or church program
  • a radio or television broadcasting network or station
  • a cable communications system
  • a newspaper or magazine
  • engaged solely in the acquisition or physical restoration of historic buildings, structures, or sites

If you still feel your organization may be eligible to receive SCFD funding, here are your next steps:

Step 1: Start collecting information

SCFD is defined by Colorado State Statute and therefore requires certain documentation to determine the eligibility of organizations. It’s important you read both the directions and checklist to make sure you have everything you need to apply.

Step 2: Apply for Eligibility
  1. Start Here: Online Tutorial – SCFD Eligibility Application
  2. To initiate an eligibility application, head to the SCFD Grant Portal (via the link below) and “Create an account now” – via the right of the landing page.
  3. Once your account is approved, you will be able to complete the eligibility application online. Please note: incomplete or late applications will not be processed. Please apply early.
  4. The Deadline for your complete eligibility application is Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 4:00 PM.

Step 3: Eligibility Open House

The Eligibility Open House will be hosted from 3:30 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. on August 9, 2023.

Eligibility Open House Sign-up sheet
Please only sign up for one slot per organization.

Important Information:

Those who have booked a time slot will receive an email from an SCFD staff member in advance of the open house.

Send any questions and/or documents specific to your organization in response to the email in preparation for your eligibility Q&A session.

Step 4: What Now?

Once you have submitted a complete eligibility application by the deadline, SCFD will perform a thorough review, determining if your organization meets all of the legal requirements. You will receive a Determination Letter no later than December 31st.

  • If you are granted eligibility, your next steps will be to review the funding process and then the Tier III grant application steps.
  • If you are found ineligible, please reach out to SCFD staff to learn how to overcome barriers with a future application.  If you do not agree with the determination (as well as organizations that have undergone an eligibility review after which SCFD staff has revoked, withdrawn, or suspended eligibility), you may appeal these actions in accordance with the following Appeal Policy.
